Choice cattle fed in huge feedlots dominate beef supply
A June Farmline report from Ken Krause of the Agriculture Department notes the share of fed cattle produced by large feedlots has grown since the 1960s. Fewer than 200 feedlots with 16 000 head capacity produced over half the nation's cattle last year, while 32 plants with 50 000+ head accounted for 17 percent. The Great Plains states now finish 71 percent of cattle, up from 28.5 percent in 1962, as small feedlots decline especially in the Corn Belt.
