Irwin Wins Open in Sudden Death After Monday Play
Hale Irwin defeats Mike Donald in a 10-foot birdie on the 91st hole to become the oldest U S Open champion. The USGA held the playoff to 18 holes, rejecting a Monday sudden death despite the crowd and TV interest. Donald, a journeyman pro, impressed but fell short in Chicago.

Heavy rains may bring heavy bill for U of I athletics
Flood damage to the University of Iowa athletic facilities could top 100000 dollars after weekend rains. Four softball fields along Highway 6 were submerged up to six feet and the all weather track was flooded. The Hawk Shop near by suffered 24 inches of water with about one third of merchandise damaged. Facilities manager Del Gehrke expects significant costs, possibly exceeding 100000, if track surface is damaged. An insurance adjuster will survey the site.
