Greenwich Connecticut AP reports the class of 1971 at a new $10 million high school chose to give their class gift to Harlem Prep, a school for dropouts in New York City. A $2,219 check was presented at graduation by class president Doug Erwin to headmaster Edward Carpenter. Harlem Prep serves students 17 and older who failed to finish other schools, with most graduates proceeding to college.
SAN JUAN UPI reports Caneel Bay resort in the Virgin Islands Friday denied rumors that Tricia Nixon Cox and Edward Finch Cox were honeymooning on the island. The resort spokesperson said no such stay was booked and no wedding plans were announced.
Dr. Charles Canning of Kirkwood Community College learns the Department of Health Education and Welfare has awarded a $15,490 grant through the College Library Resource Program Title II. Funds will buy library books and mainly add materials for special needs including health occupations pollution law enforcement and drug abuse in bound volumes slides records film strips and audio tapes.
The Post reports a July 1965 McNamara memorandum urging combining political and military efforts in Vietnam with a priority on military action. It notes calls for opening dialogue with the Soviet Union and perhaps with the Viet Cong to lay groundwork for a settlement. Three Delaware county juveniles were arrested for larceny of a motor vehicle by Linn sheriff's office. They were found in a stolen truck at 4 a.m. east of Highway 13 on Highway 151 and were released to their parents with cases referred to juvenile authorities.
Detroit manufacturer Freuhaus Corp seeks to improve ties with area youths after 900 windows were broken in six months. TEL AVIV Israel AP A portable electronic device for detecting hidden explosives has been developed by Hydronautics Israel Ltd of Rehovoth. International experts regard it as the only instrument that can detect concealed explosives. The company reports several orders and interest from airlines insurers police postal and customs authorities. One unit is to be installed at Tel Aviv International airport next week.
Harrisburg AP reports the Pennsylvania human relations commission ordered Philadelphia and Pittsburgh to desegregate at least 20 percent of racially imbalanced schools this fall. It avoided mandating a specific method but cautioned against busing over long distances or unsafe health impacts. The move is part of a gradual plan toward racial balance by 1974 75.
M G Nassif 58 Cedar Rapids lawyer and lifelong resident died after a long illness. Born Sept 18 1912 in New Castle Nebraska he studied at Coe University of Iowa Drake Law JD 1969 and held state and local bar memberships. Survived by siblings and nephews, services at Turner Chapel East and St George Syrian Orthodox church with burial at St George cemetery.
Hazel Marsh born January 21 1900 in Boston dies after brief illness at her Cedar Rapids home with son Robert W Rudd and Kenneth Marsh as sons. Dewey Rudd died earlier. Daughters include Mrs Walter Coon Mrs Charles Gregory Mrs Richard Davidson and Mrs William Conniffe. 17 grandchildren two great grandchildren. Services at Turner Chapel West 10:30 a.m. Tuesday Burial Linwood Cemetery. Casket not opened after service.
Emma Mae Jewell 81 of 1018 Ninth Street NW died Friday after a brief illness. Born March 5 1890 near Vinton she and her husband D Fredrick Jewell ran Jewell Grocery in Cedar Rapids. Surviving are two sons Dallas and Ray Jewell two daughters Ed Parsons and Cecil Courtney a sister Mrs Ed Hilton a brother Ray Parmater and four grandchildren. Memorial services 1 PM Monday at Chapel of Memories with Revs Stephen R Root and Lee Soul. Burial Cedar Memorial. Visitation Cedar Memorial after noon Sunday and at chapel after 9 AM Monday.
Lord Reith, austere Scot who built the British Broadcasting Corp into a major radio voice, died at 81 after a thigh fracture and heart trouble. He served as BBC general manager from 1922 to 1938 and is believed to have written King Edward VIII's abdication broadcast. Born John Charles Walsham Reith, he became Baron Reith of Stoneham.

In South Vietnam three attacks on U S troops occurred Friday with Da Nang and bases south of the DMZ shelled. U S Command reported two Americans killed and 19 wounded, while enemy losses were not known. An accidental rocket killed one Vietnamese civilian and wounded 15 near Da Nang.
A 64-year-old Cedar Rapids man, Jack C. Skalicky of 1410 Seventh Avenue SE, awoke to find a robber pulling him from his car in front of his home. The thief took Skalicky’s wallet after wrapping an extra pair of pants over his head. He was not injured. No robber description was provided.
Washington UPI The CBS network rejected Defense Secretary Laird's offer for a live segment in a documentary on American POWs. Laird declined a taped interview. Pentagon officials had complained the Pentagon film, The Selling of the Pentagon, was unfairly edited. CBS News chief William Small said a live segment during a film was extremely rare.
Washington AP reports the labor department ordered Atlanta contractors to hire minority workers immediately to balance skilled construction trades. It marks the fourth such action, with Philadelphia Washington and San Francisco given federal guidelines for trades analysis.
Daniel Ellsberg, identified by sources as the leaker, was said to be at an undisclosed location. McCloskey said Ellsberg handed him copies. Bickel warned he planned to bring the study to Congress.
