Waterloo liquor-store clerk may avoid charges after double shooting
Waterloo police say 65-year-old clerk Johnny Sanders likely will not face charges after fatally shooting two armed men during a botched robbery at East Fourth Street Liquor Store. Suspects Robert Bolden and Antonio Sproles, both 21, were shot as they entered with bandannas covering their mouths. Bolden died on scene. Sproles died at Allen Memorial Hospital. Sanders was unharmed. Police say the men intended to rob the store and refused to leave.

Inmate Death Under Investigation at Clarinda Facility
Alfred Eugene Myre 44 died at Clarinda Correctional Facility from blunt force abdominal injuries after outdoor recreation. He served a 50 year term for second degree murder and was at the facility since May 14 after starting his sentence September 5, 1991. The case is being investigated by the Division of Criminal Investigation.

Northeast Iowa soldier dies in Iraq
Spe Christopher Opat 29 of Lime Springs died in Baquah Iraq from injuries in a non combat incident. His father said he joined the Army after community college and was deployed to Iraq twice. Opat received several awards including two good conduct medals a National Defense Service Medal and an overseas service ribbon. His body was flown to Dover AFB before Cresco funeral arrangements. As of Tuesday 4406 U S military deaths in Iraq since 2003 with Iowa ties at least 60 referenced.
