The rating system began sixteen years ago by producers distributors and exhibitors. It offers parental guidance on scenes language or violence not a verdict on quality. It is voluntary with no legal obligation for filmmakers theater owners or parents. A seven member board chaired by one person administers ratings and all members are parents.
In Sherman Oaks California a regional board votes on film ratings after viewing each title. Last year 326 films were rated G seven PG102 PG-13 twenty five R one hundred eighty nine and X three. The system applies only to reviewed films and explains each category with audience guidance.
