AMA Faces Malpractice and Money Woes At Convention

Atlantic City AP report on the 1975 AMA convention notes three major problems: malpractice insurance, weak membership, and a financial deficit. The AMA posted a 1974 loss of 3.5 million and forecasts a 2.6 million deficit for 1975, prompting a dues hike from 110 to 250 and a 4 per member assessment that raised about 7.2 million to cover losses, deficits, and legal costs. Dr. James Sammons blamed recruiting gaps, while Dr. Malcolem Todd discussed reforms to malpractice definitions and proposed state level protections, including possible reinsurance and changes to statutes and damage measurements.
