Cedar Rapids Junior Chamber officials announced Thursday that fifteen residents will travel to Atlanta for the U S Junior Chamber of Commerce convention. Five couples will join the Iowa Jaycee caravan leaving Burlington and arriving in Atlanta Monday. The group includes the Harlan Dobrys James Corells and Robert Kacenas.
The Marion Presbyterian congregation bought the northeast corner lot at Twenty-eighth street and Tenth avenue from Mrs. Ruby Powles. Construction of a manse is expected to begin this month, facing Tenth avenue.
A sudden squall caused the drowning of seven Iowa residents when their boat capsized on Lake Traverse near the South Dakota Minnesota border. Coast Guard inspector Capt. John Schmoker said the boat was seaworthy and not overcrowded, able to hold eight. victims include Leo Doty and his children David Lewis and others, with bodies recovered.
District Judge Harry Narey ruled Joe Betty remains Emmet County sheriff for the unexpired term and through the 1956 general election. Former deputy Walter Wittneben challenged Betty’s appointment, but the judge said Wittneben’s claim only covered the unexpired term. Twito resigned December 3, creating the dispute.
Des Moines CIO United Rubber Workers locals plan wage reopening talks this year. Local 164 has served notice on Armstrong Rubber Company, with a contract to Jan 1 next year. Firestone contract runs to Oct 31 next year, both with two month wage-reopening clauses. Local 164 has 700 members. Firestone plant employs over 1,500 north of Des Moines.
