Gavel theft at Republican convention blamed on Spike gang
Chicago police said they would catch the thieves within 24 hours after the convention’s gavel vanished from the speaker’s stand. Inspector Mulberry named Spike gang as the culprits and noted a new law punishing gavel theft with 173 raps.

Veteran 16-year-old Logan’s rapid wartime service tale
By Ripley A service veteran at age sixteen Thomas F Logan of Somerville New Jersey ran away in 1899 to join a volunteer regiment and fought in the Philippines as a mascot of the 31st US infantry later joining the Marine corps at Cavite returning to Manila and serving as mounted messenger in the quartermaster department before coming home He then reenlisted in 1901 in the cavalry at Fort Myers Virginia and joined Battery B of the field artillery after a brief New Jersey National Guard return he went home having seen active service in all branches before sixteen In Monticello funeral services were held for Mrs Charles Stott who died Monday the Rev William Grossheim conducted the service She was born August 7 1867 and married Charles R Stott She is survived by four children and one brother in Riverside local Royal Neighbors attended the county convention in Wellman with 1933 convention planned for Riverside.
