The article traces Underwriters Laboratories Inc. UL, a private nonprofit based in Chicago, testing about 50 000 products annually for safety and fire hazards. It notes competition from the American Gas Association and Factory Mutual System, the rise of independent labs, and ongoing debates over certification, monopoly concerns, and new voluntary performance standards.
