Researchers at Iowa State University and Cornell University are studying Dutch Elm disease to find a chemical or genetic way to control or resist the pathogen. Iowa State’s Harold S. McNabb uses an electron microscope to observe how the disease damages elm tissue. Cornell scientists Wayne A. Sinclair Norman E. Johnson and John A. Weidhaas seek resistant strains and identify seedlings carrying resistance with the aim of breeding disease resistant elms for planting within six years.
