In northwestern Colorado a posse captured Robert Blair 19 of Englewood and James Williams 17 of Lawton after they helped escape with four other Buena Vista reformatory inmates. They kidnapped warden Walter Johnson and released him unharmed after threatening his life. Four of the six had been recaptured within 24 hours.
A commerce department report laments the 11 percent recession of 1937 and warns that even larger government borrowing and spending will be needed this year in a bid to spur recovery. The editorial tone mocks the narrative as a fairy tale for children.

H. H. Horton of San Diego testified at the mail fraud trial of Willard F. Main and 12 co defendants that L F Underwood sold him 25 coin operated vending machines claimed to yield 120 percent profit in 18 months. Horton paid $875 and believed New Specialty held exclusive San Diego rights. He later found similar machines sold by Standard Mercantile Macken Appleton Novelty, all owned by Main and associates.
Paul High aged 19 and Francis Comley aged 16 of Cedar Rapids appeared before Judge C J Haas and pleaded not guilty to arson. Bond set at $1000 each. The charge stems from the Voehl barn fire with separate statements about the May 16 incident and a prior Rawson barn blaze. Comley previously committed to Eldora training school in 1937 and now to juvenile authorities.
