Weekend Weather Warmth Prevails With scattered Showers

The forecast calls for cloudy skies with occasional showers in the east clearing west tonight. Temperatures stay cooler in many areas with lows in the 50s. A warming trend is expected later in the week with highs mostly in the 70s and overnight lows in the 50s. Precipitation totals range from about .20 to .75 inches across Iowa by end of period.

City to open resurfacing bids on six streets

The council will open bids for a $49 594 75 resurfacing project on six streets and hold a 10 am public hearing at city hall on June 27. Public Improvements Commissioner Woody Stolba outlines 14 and 3 inch asphalt layers, widening on Eighth avenue SE, funded entirely by state gas tax with no assessments. The project aims to finish this summer.

SUI Student Killed in Rainy Highway Crash Near Homestead

Ronald Kline 19 of Chicago dies after a head on collision on highway 6 near Homestead. SUI student Carolyn Massarini 20 of Melcher injured with scalp cuts and concussion. Carl Schonhoff 42 of Davenport and wife Elizabeth 40 treated for minor injuries. Police say passing in a no passing zone led to the fatal crash. Youthful Driver Given 40 Days

Cedar Rapids teen Robert C. Gandy aged 17 was sentenced to 40 days in jail by Judge Donald P. Barnes in municipal court for leaving the scene of an accident and failing to control his car. The incidents occurred on Friday and Sunday near Fifth Street NW and Sixth Street. Gandy’s address is 126 Rave NW. his license was suspended for one year.

Ralph Homer Chiverton 81 of 1410 N St SW died at his home Saturday night. He owned Chiverton Real Estate and Insurance for 41 years and lived in Cedar Rapids all his life. Survived by wife Jennie Newman Chiverton two daughters Irene McKee and Mary Wallace one Eleanor Newman two sons Arthur L Newman and Clifford I Newman a sister and a brother eight grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. He belonged to Trinity Methodist Maine Lodge No 643 IOOF Rebekahs and the Cedar Rapids Traveling Men's club. Services Tuesday at Beatty Bearle's with burial at Linwood. Andrew Lucius Bennett died at his Cedar Rapids home after a long illness. Born June 10, 1879 in Chippewa Falls Wisconsin, he married Helga Magnuson in 1916. Survived by five sons Norman Raytown Missouri Willard Willis Paul Ivan all Cedar Rapids, two daughters Pauline Lowe and Betty Graham, seven grandchildren, two sisters and a brother.
