After meetings and a large Missouri rally, Ford advisers debated whether to take all 19 delegates or seek a compromise with Reagan. Ford claimed electability over Reagan, citing a Bond poll showing Ford ahead but admitting Carter would win if the election were held today.
Iowa Republicans report no sign national Ford staff plans a presidential stop in the state while Reagan backers tout expected gains in Iowa’s 36 delegation seats. GOP officials say they will accommodate a Ford speech if possible as caucus night looms and delegates are selected for the 1976 convention.
Washington AP reported a tentative Democratic 1976 platform draft endorses busing to achieve racial integration as a judicial tool of last resort. The draft also pledges efforts to cut adult unemployment to 3 percent within four years and provide living-wage jobs for all adults who want them. The subcommittee met behind closed doors with final approval by the national convention in July expected. Dukakis said there is broad unanimity on economy and unemployment. Carter is seen as influential, though Udall and Jackson aides are more active in early talks.
Two Cedar Rapids residents were in serious condition after Friday traffic crashes at different locations. Linda Hollis, 35, suffered head injuries when her car hit a parked pickup on Oakland Road NE and was kept for observation. Terry McConnell, 21, was injured in a collision between his motorcycle and a car driven by Lee Von Lienen. Von Lienen received a citation for improper left turn. Sandra Schoon, 18, was treated after her car was rear ended by Charles Alnutt, who was cited for following too closely.
Jamie Riffey, 3, of the William Riffey family in Fairfax, remained in fair condition in St. Luke's pediatrics ICU with head injuries after falling from a pickup truck window near Center Point Friday evening. Linn deputies had not filed a report by early Saturday. On this date in 1944 Germany began using its buzz bomb on England in World War II.
The Linn county American Legion will hold its annual flag burning at Legion Park in Marion at 1:30 p.m. Sunday. People may bring unserviceable flags to Marion post 298 or to the park for disposal. The event, conducted the Sunday before Flag Day, serves as an approved disposal method.
Obituary notices list Douglas Lee Hrdlicka 19 of 3000 J Street SW who died at home and whose death is under investigation. Other notices include Newhall George Bier Schenk 77 at St John’s Lutheran Church and Memorial services for several locals with dates and locations in Tipton, West Branch, Rowley, and Hiawatha. A separate item notes Marlene Ann Florang 19 treated after her car struck a parked vehicle on Wilson Avenue SW. no charges filed.

Keota police Marshal Douglas Lee Bell aged 23 was shot to death near Keota early Friday. 25 to 30 officers from Keokuk and Washington counties and the BCI are in the probe. Bell’s body was found near his patrol car on highway 77 south of highway 92. Autopsy results pending. Bell recently completed a six week law enforcement class with his father at Indian Hills Community College and studied at Luther College and the University of Iowa.
Dorothy Rausch Tipton, 60, of Napoleon Ohio, died in a traffic crash on Interstate 80 near the Tipton interchange at 1:45 pm Friday. Her husband Russell, the driver, was treated and released from a Iowa City hospital. The car left the roadway and hit the shoulder mounted abandoned truck. wrecker workers and the truck operator Tom Nodurft of Tipton were injured.
In Mexico City officials will launch intensive talks on a general prisoner swap for those jailed on drug charges. Kis singer cited a list of proposals discussed in talks. About 500 Americans are imprisoned in Mexican jails amid complaints of maltreatment and limited U S consular access.
Tama page reports 20 year old Dale A Steahm of Toledo killed in a highway 63 crash at 11 18 a m Friday. Two Tama brothers, Douglas L Graff 22 and Richard D Graff 25, were driving the competing autos. Investigators say the southbound car crossed left of center and the northbound car swerved left then right. Front bumper struck Steuhm causing fatal head injuries. Both Graffs face charges of driving left of center. Steuhm employed by South Tama school district. Body sent to Harrison funeral home Tama.
Richard Saeugling five of 3601 Oakland Road NE Iowa City is in serious condition at University hospitals after a fire at their home Friday afternoon. His brother Robert fourteen is in good condition at St Luke's hospital. Fire officials say Richard has second degree burns over 45 percent of his body and Robert burned his hands. The boys were playing with matches that ignited gasoline. They are children of Mr and Mrs Roland Saeugling.
