Cicadas emerge in waves as periodic brood nears peak
University of Iowa biologist Andrew Forbes explains periodical cicadas spend 13 or 17 years underground feeding on tree roots before emerging. Adults live four to six weeks and females lay eggs while males call to attract mates. Fungus massospora cicadina can infect both broods, altering behavior and spreading further infection. Local sightings urged in Kent Park and Sugar Bottom areas as emergence wanes.
