Man Hopes To Reconstruct Elkader Depot
Larry Lerch advances his lifelong dream of a full sized Elkader Railroad Depot replica. He moved a 1949 ribside caboose in 1989 and added a 1953 boxcar in 1993 to Elkader City Park, sitting on 90 feet of volunteer laid track. The depot project honors the 1875 Iowa Eastern line and Milwaukee Road era, with no city funds involved.

Depot project to house railroad memorabilia in Elkader
The Milwaukee Road Historical Society provided blueprints for Elkader’s depot project that will display railroad memorabilia and a MRHS donated train layout on a rotating basis. Estimated cost 70 000 to 80 000 dollars with grants sought and an August 23 model railroad show planned as a fundraiser. Lerch aims to start building the depot later this year.
