Humphrey defends stance on Wallace running mate
Senator Hubert Humphrey criticized reporters for misreading his remarks on possibly accepting Alabama Governor George Wallace as a running mate under certain conditions. He compared such an option to him becoming an astronaut and said Wallace is not his kind of Democrat. The issue arose after remarks at a Textile Workers union event and was echoed by Jesse Jackson urging clarity on the Wallace possibility.
