Winter steps down as Cedar Rapids Public Works director
Cedar Rapids Public Works Director Jen Winter will leave her post to accept a new role in Florida. Winter led about 200 employees since 2015, played a key part in responses to the 2016 flood and the Aug. 10, 2020 derecho, and will be replaced on an interim basis by Deputy City Manager Sandi Fowler. The city will hire a replacement via Novak Consulting Group, with a six month search plan.

Cedar Rapids City Council authorized City Manager Jeff Pomeranz to sign an eight million dollar settlement with Jerime Mitchell and his wife over a 2016 police shooting. The carrier paid without admitting fault. officer Lucas Jones was fired for unrelated policy violations and appeals continue. Mitchell and wife filed suit in 2017 alleging pretextual stop and excessive force with a police dog.

Inmates murder trial set for June 22 in Linn County
The trial of Thomas Woodard and Michael Dutcher for killing correctional officer Robert McFarland and nurse Lorena Schulte at Anamosa State Penitentiary is moved to Linn County District Court with a June 22 start date for Woodard. Dutcher may seek a speedy trial and a hearing is scheduled. Woodard has a pretrial on June 18.
