Michael Dukakis clinched the Democratic presidential nomination with decisive wins in New Jersey New Mexico and Montana and a strong lead in California. He headed toward a mathematical lock on the nomination while George Bush framed himself as underdog and vowed to fight back as the campaign heads into the fall.
Montauk at Clermont draws visitors for a famed peony patch with blooms tied to the Larrabee era. Plants survive from 114 years at Montauk and 134 years in Iowa, originally from Connecticut gardens via Capt. and Mrs. G A Appelman. Montauk opened 1874, blooms projected one to two weeks, open daily noon to 5 p.m. Memorial Day through Oct 31 along Highway 18.
A federal test report shows 17 year olds struggle with junior high math, with about half able to handle typical problems. Officials in Iowa dispute applicability to the Midwest, noting strong local norms and ACT scores.
