Pilot work experience program eyed to curb high school dropouts
Marion News reports Emerson and Washington school officials and counselors presented plans for a pilot work experience program next year. The effort involves teachers such as Judith Swanson and Marvin Spores and principals including Harold Walker and Ri¢hard Benz. Aimed at reducing dropout rates, the program would grant up to one half unit per semester for part time work and released school time, with surveys showing 24 dropouts last year and 48 potential at risk eighth graders needing observation. An Area X Community College contract will fund adult evening classes, while a budget hearing is scheduled for July.
