Mid-Victorian Soutter House Remains a Living Legend

A Cedar Rapids story of the Soutter home at 2015 First Avenue E where a mid Victorian era spirit lingers amid dismantling. Relatives and friends sorted furnishings as portraits and dog pictures lined walls while a grand piano and stained glass echoed former social life. The 20 room house, built in the 1890s, housed art, horses and sports memories, with tours revealing ornate chandeliers, fireplaces and gold inlaid details. The Daughters of Isabella met at the library selecting books, and Mary Generose McNamara of Iowa City and J Max Ely of Cedar Rapids announced their June wedding at St Matthew's.
