Moderately warm conditions returned in Cedar Rapids on Saturday as sunshine led to a high of 72 degrees after a morning low of 56. The temperature held near 72 from 1 to 4 pm before easing, then stood at 67 at 7 pm and 51 by midnight.

Lynn police arrested 38 year old James Hogan on burglary charges after a break in at a restaurant. Officers recovered the restaurant watchdog at the scene and Hogan was taken into custody.

Baron Maximilian von Romberg, 27, a social figure in New York and California, died when a cabin plane’s motor exploded and the craft dived into the Shrewsbury River near Fair Haven New Jersey. He attempted to bail out but his parachute tangled with the rudder. He was the son of the first German officer killed in World War I. He left a $50 million inheritance from his mother Antoinette Converse. Survived by his wife Emily Hall of Montecito California. they married in 1928 and underwent several reconciliations and separations since, remaining connected to a California publishing firm.
RALEIGH N C AP Senator Robert R Reynolds built a commanding lead over Rep Frank W Hancock Jr as returns from Saturdays Democratic primary for the U S Senate were tabulated Reynolds, completing his first full term, had 149 967 votes to Hancock 103 648 in 1058 of 1860 precincts Both ran on New Deal platforms and Hancock is from the Fifth District
Washington AP reports the administration launches its lead spending attack on depression while Congress works on a 3.723 billion dollar relief bill. WPA use funds on hand to create about 30,000 jobs weekly, with 2.8 million projected over seven months if the measure passes. Agriculture Secretary Wallace directs surplus commodities to aid relief, expanding distribution of free foods. A conference committee will set differences between Senate and House versions. Roosevelt plans a recovery program and aims to trim ordinary government spending by about 400 million in the new fiscal year, targeting a 10 percent reserve for regular departments.

Barton Carter 23 son of Nashua New York industrialist Winthrop L Carter is missing in Spain while with the loyalist forces on the Aragon front. The State Department asks Seville to verify capture by rebels after a March 19 letter said he enlisted. Carter, Williams College graduate, had worked in children relief efforts.
AP dispatches report eight men were killed in a clash between farmers and a robber gang near Tarimoro in Guanajuato state Mexico. The incident highlights continuing violence in the region as authorities investigate the shootout and identify those involved.
Socialist leader Norman Thomas faced a violent disruption at Military Park as about 100 protesters and a brass band drowned him out.
