Contractor in Linn thefts admits scheme and plea

Cedar Rapids. Phil Sylvester, 39, pleaded guilty to first degree theft for his role in a scheme with Michael Strope that defrauded Linn County of about 180000 dollars. Sylvester cooperated with investigators and faces a deferred judgment pending probation. Strope, 42, was sentenced in May to up to 10 years after pleading guilty.

He plans another climb soon and trains to regain fitness after a gastro intestinal illness halted his May attempt at Camp 4. Huss left April 1 with 13 trekkers and base camp hike lasted ten days. Court rules Elian Gonzalez ineligible for asylum hearing

An 11th Circuit panel ruled the government acted within its power to block an asylum hearing for Elian Gonzalez and said only his father could seek asylum for the Cuban boy. The decision delays immediate departure and gives two weeks to appeal to the full court or Supreme Court. Juan Miguel Gonzalez urged ending the appeals to allow the father and son to return home.

Mike White, 45, from Waterloo and in hospital for cancer treatment, won a Mercedes M series SUV in a Des Moines WHO radio and TV contest. He plans to sell the car to cover medical bills after multiple hospital stays and two surgeries. The M series starts at $35,000.
