Attorney General Tom Miller announced a $250000 settlement with Allied Mills Inc toward 35 Iowa farmers who were harmed by diseased hogs sold or leased through the Better Bill Gilts program. The suit, under the Iowa Consumer Fraud Act, did not admit wrongdoing.

Boy dies in Kalona farm accident
A 12-year-old Amish boy, Sanford L. Yoder, was run over and killed by a horse drawn manure spreader on a family farm two miles west of Kalona. He was driving the horses when they spooked and threw him from the seat. Washington County Medical Examiner Dr. Dennis Shimp declared him dead at the scene.

Grinnell College Wins $50,000 Library Grant
Grinnell College in Grinnell received a $50,000 grant from the Arthur Vining Davis Foundations of Coral Gables Florida. The funds boost the endowment for library acquisitions and assist the college in meeting a National Endowment for the Humanities challenge grant. President George Drake says improving the library is a top priority and plans include renovating the 22 year old facility to increase shelf and study space.
