Iowa Fraternity House Tax Case Highlights Campus Impact
The piece discusses how high assessments could force University of Iowa fraternities to close, with lost taxes to be covered by other revenues. It cites an Iowa State College example where a steel house valued at 6400 was taxed at 6400, then 8000 and 8900 in prior years. It notes the university’s lack of aid to Greek houses and potential enrollment strains from housing 800 to 1300 students.

University asks clubs to host visiting students each year
Requests at functions bring thousands of high school visitors to campus for multi day stops. Clubs must house five to 15 members or feed guests at their expense. Fraternities and sororities bear the burden while campus taxes rarely apply to dorm residents. The author argues for university help with tax assessments to keep houses open.
