Canadian Packers Buying Midwest Beef for Resale
Gordon Jackson reports that Canadian meat processors have begun buying Midwest cattle for resale in the United States at higher prices. About 500 head were sold at Sioux City and Omaha markets, with Canada purchasing 10 to 72 loads at Sioux City and six to eight at Omaha. The cattle will be slaughtered in Canadian plants and re sold in the U S, exploiting exemptions from retail price ceilings. Officials note this could be the start of a broader trend unless the price ceiling is lifted.
