Cedar Rapids faces a 1959 city budget rise as total expenses reach 7,594,500 with a 3 to 4 mill tax increase predicted and a 9 to 10 mill overall burden when school and county levies are included. The budget details show 32 items up, 11 down, five unchanged, with major rise for city barn facilities and several department funds while wage changes loom.
Eli Lilly executive vice president Forrest Teel 54 was shot to death early Thursday in Indianapolis. Witnesses described a car fleeing the scene and debris at the curb as police searched for suspects. An autopsy was planned to recover the three bullets found in his throat right hip and chest. Teel owned a Cessna plane and was well known as a top sales leader for the company with a 200 million dollar annual business. Police suggested robbery unlikely due to cash found.

Arthur J. Hunnell 42 of Marengo died in a head on collision with a truck on highway 149 near Walford. He died hours later in Cedar Rapids hospital. The truck driver Dwight Dace of Sterling IL was uninjured. Hunnell was an inspection specialist for the U.S. Navy and returning from Fort Dodge. He is survived by a wife and three children. Services set for St. Patrick's Marengo with a rosary in Hoover funeral home.
Rep Hebert says Presidential Assistant Sherman Adams refused to testify on charges he used improper influence to alter an army textile contract dispute. Hebert noted Adams sent a letter saying appearance would serve no useful purpose amid a probe involving Raglaine Worsteds Inc and a $41,284 World War II penalties refund.
United States Steel Corp boosted rolled sheet and strip steel prices by about 4.25 per ton, following Armco and others. Bethlehem Steel joined the rise, with major producers lining up. Sen Kefauver called for possible inquiries and a rollback discussion as auto and appliance prices remain unlikely to rise immediately.
In Caldwell Idaho Darwin Brannon six fell from a car door into the path of a half ton pickup. Driver Cecil Black swerved quickly shifting his wheels to shield the boy and Darwin was not struck.
Linn County Medical Society announces a public forum titled Your Child s Health Problems set for August 19 at 8 p m in Coe auditorium. A moderator and four Linn county doctors will answer questions on health problems of children to 11 years old.

He said he would attend and suggested Geneva or New York as possible sites, inviting Khrushchev and likely the U S to participate. Nehru also announced plans to attend a summit in mid August.

Four year old Raymond Cater died after a truck ran over a cardboard box he was hiding in on a road in Aldershot England. The incident occurred Wednesday and police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the accident.

Washington UPI reports the House approved a bill to raise Social Security benefits by about 7 percent starting December and increase Social Security taxes from January 1. The tax rise affects employees earning $4,800 or more, from $94.50 to $120, with employers required to match the employee tax.
Bever Avenue SE is designated a through street from Third Avenue to Thirty-fourth Street, prompting stop sign installations on all non through streets except Nineteenth. Riverside California AP reports a mother accidentally shot and killed her 23 year old son during a home fast draw practice. Dorothy Clayton 45 and James Clayton an airman at the nearby March Army base believed their revolvers were unloaded when the weapon fired.
