Iowa Legion Conclave Program Set in Cedar Rapids

A four day Iowa American Legion convention in Cedar Rapids runs Sunday through Wednesday with highlights including Capt. Harold E. Fischer Jr. and Gov. Leo A. Hoegh addresses on Monday, a Kingston stadium band contest Monday evening, and a downtown parade Tuesday. The schedule lists registrations, memorial services, district caucuses, committee meetings, a Seaborn Collins address, and a closing executive committee meeting at Danceland.

Government Says Brosh Failed To Report 75000

Frank A. Brosh of Cedar Rapids and Solon faces a civil action by the government over unreported income from 47 funerals totaling 75000 across 1947 to 1952. He previously received a two year sentence and 5000 fine for income tax evasion. The suit seeks to determine any remaining tax owed.

Children Garden Exhibits and Picnic Set for Aug 15

The Playground and Recreation Commission will host the annual Children’s Garden Exhibit and Picnic on August 15 at Bever Park’s large pavilion. About 3,000 participants may enter cut flowers arrangements potted plants vegetables canned produce and garden notebooks. Local judges will award first and second prizes in each class with merchandise ribbons and cash for notebooks. Children and parents bring picnic provisions and picnic races will run during judging.

Virginia tests electronic weight device for trucks

Richmond based AP reports the Virginia highway department and Bureau of Public Roads are testing an electronic scale to curb unnecessary stops. If a truck exceeds legal limits, a red light signals the station and the vehicle will be weighed on standard highway scales.

Allied League Sports Festival Set for Next Sunday at Ellis Park

The Allied Industrial League hosts its annual sports festival next Sunday at Ellis Park in cooperation with the Playground and Recreation Commission. Events include golf, softball, horseshoes, dart throw, and ball pitch with top teams earning trophies and a traveling aggregate trophy. Players pay a $1 entry per participant.

Man Swears He Isn't Dead at Seattle Court

Olin Martin Lamb aged 40 testified before Assistant U.S. Attorney Frank Cushman that he is alive. The case aims to quiet doubts of his mother Mrs. Lottie Lamb Mann of Jacksonville Florida who believes he is dead since 1940 and has claimed his $1000 life insurance. Lamb did not explain his lack of letters.

Nathan Baldwin Soloist at Band Concert Tonight

Cedar Rapids cornetist Nathan Baldwin, June graduate of McKinley high school, will be soloist with the Cedar Rapids municipal band at Ellis park tonight and Riverside park Wednesday. He has won state solo honors, appeared at Shrine Palm Sunday concerts, and performed around Iowa.

Mt Shishaldin in the Aleutian chain is spewing smoke and ash again. Gordon Gay of Reeve Aleutian Airways reports great billowing clouds rising over Shishaldin to an estimated 50 000 feet. Shishaldin stands 9 978 feet on Unimak Island about 700 miles southwest of Anchorage.
