Traffic Death Rate Hits Record Low For First Half 1948
The national safety council reports the first six months of 1948 saw 560 fewer traffic deaths than the prior year, a 4 percent drop despite a 8 percent rise in mileage. The five month rate stood at 7.2 deaths per hundred million miles, the lowest in U.S. history, though 13,690 were killed overall in the first half. June deaths totaled 2,420, unchanged from June 1947. May rose 3 percent over last year, while the first four months showed declines of 3 to 13 percent.

31st Montgomery Ward Executive Resigns Post
CHICAGO INS The fifth vice president to sever ties with Montgomery Ward & Co this year resigns. Robert Smith, in charge of finances, leaves Aug 1 after nearly 25 years with the firm. He is the 31st top official to resign since Sewell L Avery became chairman in 1931. Smith had been treasurer and board member.
