GAO report condemns U.S. foreign arms sales program
The GAO study led by Sen. Riegle and Sen. Baucus finds the foreign military sales account a mess. It cites Iran canceling $7.7 billion in orders, notes major accounting failures at the Defense Department, and says the Navy paid foreign suppliers over $2 billion without clear article- or service-level records. The Iranian trust fund sits at about $112 million with no new funds expected, and the total closing cost remains uncertain.
