Severe storms sweep Iowa with tornado hit near Ames
Record winds and heavy rain disrupted parts of eastern Iowa. An apparent tornado affected Ames between 3 45 and 4 00 am with winds over 100 mph, damaging 8 to 10 homes and uprooting trees along a 400 by 0 75 mile corridor. Reports of a twin sighting north of Polk City. Cedar Rapids area saw localized damage and downed power lines as seven inches of rain fell across several towns. A North Iowa barn was destroyed and a traffic light fell at Memorial Drive and Mount Vernon Road SE. Cleanup progresses with forestry crews clearing debris and traffic restored later today.

Bearded man sought in kidnapping at Daytona Beach
A bearded young drifter is sought in the kidnapping of Caroline Thompson a 5 year old Georgia girl taken from her parents station wagon at a Daytona Beach motel. Police and FBI used cars helicopters and air planes to search the area for the child wearing a yellow shirt green skirt and white sandals. The Thompsons appealed for her safe return as investigators described drift er-type suspects with no identification yet.
