South Viet Troops Hit In Mistake Near Hue
SAIGON AP Forty nine soldiers in a South Vietnamese infantry company were killed or wounded after a North Vietnamese assault and a mistaken U.S. bombing into government lines near Hue. U.S. jets dropped 500 pound bombs into South Vietnamese positions, killing eight and wounding 25. The Saigon command reported another death and 15 wounded as the unit endured 1,000 North Vietnamese mortar rounds and ground attack. The battle occurred northeast of Pirebase Bastogne, about eight miles southwest of Hue, the fifth American bombing incident since July 4 with 19 South Vietnamese dead and 76 wounded. Field officers blamed close quarters fighting and confused maneuvering amid many U.S. planes in the air. A South Vietnamese marine unit repulsed an assault near Quang Tri City. Two helicopters were shot down in the Mekong delta. An American officer was listed as missing. Only one of three district capitals recaptured in central coastal Binh Dinh province remained under government control.
