Ely Resident Hugh D Jones Dies At 85

Hugh D Jones 85 of rural Ely died Sunday in a Cedar Rapids hospital. Born October 26 1889 in St Helens county England he served for many years as a clerk at Johnson county home. He lived with the Robert Shebetka family near Ely and willed his body to the University of Iowa anatomical research department. Beatty Bearle Murdoch chapel in charge of arrangements.

Mob Attack on Black Salesmen at Carson Beach Boston

About 100 whites confronted six Black traveling salesmen on Carson beach in South Boston injuring one man. The six fled as sticks and pipes struck. Robert Jackson, 31, of Cambria, NY, was caught and beaten before rescuers took him to City Hospital. Police described a racially charged scene amid desegregation tensions.

Magistrate Court Dismissals and Guilty Pleas Listed

A series of magistrate court actions include several dismissals for possession of marijuana and related charges. Kenneth Hall and Gary Drakos saw drops. Suit Claims Iowa Hospital Negligence

IOWA CITY A Margaret Kelly 51 filed a 250000 suit against the state of Iowa alleging negligence by University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. She says she was treated 11 times in 1973 including a biopsy and that cancer was not found earlier, with later tests revealing cancer and delays in treatment.

Congress Grants Romania Most Favored Nation Trade Status

Washington Congress approved President Ford’s plan to extend nondiscriminatory trade terms to Romania by 355 to 41 in the House after Senate approval 88 to 2. Ford certified Romania would permit free emigration of Jews and minorities, a test of a new trade law linking MFN status to emigration. The Ways and Means Committee praised rising Romanian emigration and forecast a reassessment in about a year.

Iowa Limousine Service Wins Permanent Airport Authority

The Iowa Commerce Commission approved permanent authority for Iowa Limousine Service Inc to provide transport between Cedar Rapids airport and Iowa City Cedar Rapids areas. It denied a similar request by Charter Coaches Inc. The service has operated for two and a half years with certificates for airport transport and routes to Marion Hiawatha and nearby Iowa City areas. Temporary approval was granted in March.

Two Sentenced Paroled on Car Theft Charges

In Cedar Rapids federal court Judge Edward J. McManus placed two admitted car thieves on probation after pleading guilty to interstate transportation of a stolen vehicle. Robert Porterfield, 22, formerly of Philadelphia, and Daniel Engler, 24, formerly of San Pablo, California, admitted driving a stolen van from Minneapolis to Clear Lake after a May 19 intoxicated episode. They received suspended prison terms and three years on probation, with warnings they face prison if they violate terms.

Motorcycle Crash Hurts Alburnett Man Richard Ritze

Richard L. Ritze 25 Alburnett was treated and released from St Luke's hospital Saturday night after injuries from a motorcycle crash. His bike skidded on sand and hit a bridge on the Alburnett road north of Marion. On this date in 1945 a military plane crash killed 13 in New York City.
