The Army and Air Force announce enlistment options for women in the WAC and WAF. Women serving in WAC may transfer to either branch and keep rank. Waivers for age limits may be granted with supervisor and commanding officer recommendations. The plan targets 7500 WAC and 4000 WAF enlisted personnel with a late September start.
Jennings Share of Story City died in Eldora hospital from injuries sustained in an auto crash near Story City the previous Sunday.
Bernard Mullaley, a World War II veteran who served in Japan, is the new commander of the Marion American Legion post, the first WWII veteran in the top post. Frances Wahl, who leads the Legion auxiliary, teaches at Robins Independent School in Monroe Township and has held multiple auxiliary and district roles.
The Marion Nature and Garden club hosts a free garden and flower show August 4 at the Christian church. Entries due by 11 a.m. judging begins then. Open to members and nonmembers for vegetables and flowers with judges Mrs. John A. Clay and Mrs. Celan Rollins. Piano pieces by Ruth Engstrom and Edna Roberts.
Will Teach Donald Rundquist is hired to teach driving and safety education this fall at Waverly High School. Mr and Mrs Rundquist with children Muriel and Gordon plan to move to Waverly later this summer. Birthday Dinner Guests Honor Mrs West and Mrs Rommann's Mother Mrs Christian son Also Present.
Mr and Mrs Floyd G Slauson travelled to Water loo to spend the weekend with Mrs Slausons father Charles L DeWald who will observe his 84th birthday today in Marion. Other items note Methodist Laura Missionary Guild picnic and several lodge meetings and club gatherings in the Marion area.
The 58th Linn County Old Settlers Association reunion will be held in Marion city park on August 26. A Marion Chamber of Commerce meeting appointed committees for reception, publicity, decorations, membership, nominating, gifts, work, and the program and parade, naming members such as George Goodyear C R Biddick Miss Emma Klein Rev Clyde Scott J L Papes and others.
Cedar Rapids D A R flag chair Mary Taylor 89 will discuss American history on Station KCRG at 3 15 p m Tuesday. She will be introduced by J M Wiley Cedar Rapids Radio Council gram chairman. Born in Marion she recently moved from 959 Tenth Street to the Eastern Star Home at Boone.
Beloit resident Beloit Charles D Cheadle with daughters Helen and Evelyn visits brother Frank Cheadle and sister Mrs Jerry J Mann. Helen Cheadle, a University of Wisconsin graduate, will begin work August 1 as a librarian at Notre Dame University.

H C Glover reported two of his best cows dead in the pasture after a lightning strike. The same morning his wife found 20 baby chicks and three hens dead. The cows were killed by lightning while the chickens fell to a fox.
Mr and Mrs Arthur E Fair hurst and Addie McCulloch plan a Saturday departure to Springfield Mass and a drive up the East Coast through Maine. Rev Arthur R Osborne and family arrive this week to visit his parents P A Osborne. Memorial hall hosts a 2 30 pm meeting and a Thomas park picnic at 12 30 pm Thursday by church groups.
At its first meeting the Iowa Fire Safety Association proposed creating fire prevention committees in every community. President William Poinsett of Dubuque said committees will focus on seasonal campaigns, brush and grass fire danger, and summer vacation hazards. Communities will be urged to plan Fire Prevention Week programs aligned with national observance. The group formed last May after a governor led conference and now numbers about 150 members.
Warsaw reports from the ministry of agriculture indicate over 28 million acres are sown and cultivated by peasants this year. Government agronomist J Pajak says plantings exceed targets in most provinces and the harvest will render the country self sufficient in food.
