Rival kills New York councilman inside City Hall

Brooklyn Councilman James Davis was fatally shot at City Hall in Manhattan by rival Othniel Askew who gained entry through security with ties to the victim. Askew died later at a hospital. Mayor Bloomberg ordered metal detectors for all officials.

River cleanup leader returns to Mississippi town

Chad Pregracke, a self described river rat from East Moline Illinois, leads a corporate backed effort that has removed over 800 tons of flood and pollution debris from the Mississippi and its tributaries. With 30 Lansing area volunteers they gathered rusted detritus including tires propane tanks and kitchen sinks before continuing downstream.

Guard to supplement replacement troops

Washington officials say a mix of Army active duty and National Guard units will deploy to Iraq starting in September to relieve combat troops still facing daily attacks. Gen John Keane aims to keep about 150000 U S troops in place through March and enable current forces to return home gradually. Two National Guard brigades about 10000 soldiers will head to Iraq next spring to replace active duty troops.
