One-Time Policeman Murdered on North Side Street
CHICAGO (OPI) A former Chicago police commander, who served time for shaking down tavern owners and testified against colleagues, was shot to death Friday on a North Side street. Mark Thanasouras, 49, was killed by shotgun blasts to the face and chest near his girlfriend’s apartment in what police call an assassination. Investigators said no motive or theft was found, and the case may reflect organized crime ties. Thanasouras, who rose quickly through the ranks after joining in 1956, had testified in earlier prosecutions and claimed he was marked for death while in prison.
