Severe storms swept across Iowa from northwest to southeast on Thursday night into Friday. Humeston reported eight to 10 inches of rain with flooded basements and outages. Lightning caused two small fires. heavy winds and hail damaged crops. Estherville saw corn flattened and soybean fields stripped over a two mile by four and a half mile area.

McGREGOR Joseph Kaspar age 22 from Cleveland an inmate at Luster Heights prison camp was captured in Ferryville Wisconsin Thursday night after escaping a work detail.
A 16-year-old boy was arrested Thursday on a charge of attempted arson tied to an incident Tuesday at the Klinger Paint warehouse at H avenne and Fifth street NW. He allegedly used a pickaxe to damage paint cans and started a small fire with rags. he was processed by the youth bureau and released to his parents. His case was referred to the probation office.
Rabbi Meir Kahane and two Jewish Defense League members received suspended prison terms and probation on federal conspiracy charges to manufacture bombs. Kahane fined 5000 dollars. A fog shrouded Interstate 64 high level bridge in Chesapeake Virginia saw a chain of collisions injuring 21 people. Twelve vehicles burned and about 20 others damaged as the 6 a.m. wreck halted traffic for miles on both ends of the bridge over the Elizabeth River.
Iowa City police and state officers search for George Calhoun 25 Mt. Pleasant a minimum security aide who escaped while being transported to the Iowa Security Medica facility at Oakdale. He allegedly threatened a guard and forced a drive into Iowa City before fleeing on foot during a return trip from Kirkwood Community college. Calhoun serves a 10 year term for breaking and entering.
