Waning Josephine Popularity Overshadowed by Beer Barrel Polka

Cedar Rapids dealer Leo Miller Jr of Automatic Sound System notes Josephine once topped the phonograph scene with 200 machines playing her records. The Beer Barrel Polka now rivals her, while Sunrise Serenade Cinderella and others remain popular. Miller cites radio repetition and timing as key to a record’s rise. He notes 10,000 records played weekly in the city and 62 machines installed by his company, with total near 200 machines. An odd line about lobster hatching appears, unrelated to the music story.

Bricklayers Shine On Third Avenue Street Widening

William O. King, foreman, describes tar work in the Third Avenue widening project. Reporters observe the busy crew and note signs may attract more attention. Workers use tar at 350 to 400 degrees F, set when cooler, and scrape along with a cutter and tar ribbon. The paving uses six inch concrete base, one inch sand, three inch fiber lug brick, shortening curb to pavement distance by ten inches. King says brick paving is a nearly lost art and the longest lasting pavement.
