Larry Kersten hunts rattlers each spring on the hills around a North Iowa farm. He captures them with tongs and a sack, removes poison fangs, and may sell to buyers in other states. He notes myths about age and bites and describes the bounty and the long life of kept snakes.
Special to The Gazette Iowa City Dr Richard E Shope longtime University of Iowa student and later Rockefeller Institute researcher has 15 years of work suggesting sources for influenza and other virus diseases. His studies indicate earthworms as carriers of swine lungworms harboring swine influenza virus, with implications for human epidemics.
Rural notes report two run away accidents in Union City township with injuries to George Dressel hause and William Sadler. Also dated events include Mrs. Samuel Rosa’s ninety fifth birthday in Winneshiek county and the death of Buchanan county resident Joseph Straw at Independence.
An invitation was telegraphed to Thomas A. Dewey, New York district attorney, to speak at the four county fair in Coon Rapids. H. A. Riis, president of the fair, cited Dewey's statewide win and urged a talk on solving the agricultural problem during the fair dates September 25 26 27 and 28. The message asked Dewey to address Iowa farmers on any chosen day or evening.
The Central City band under Roy Sawyer plays today at 2 30 p m at the American Legion pool. The pool has been cleaned repainted and redecorated this week by about thirty volunteers from the American Legion and friends. The pool area including bridge approaches and terrace have been replenished and flood damage cleared.
Observing Catherine DeWees Irene Harris and Catherine Brink celebrated a surprise party Thursday evening at 970 Eighteenth Street. The hostesses served refreshments after games and named attendees Eileen Schenken Mary Ives Mary Starry Carl Nebendahl Keith Stark Dick Hall Albert Van Fossen and Billie Vahl.
Col. Ralph D. Horton of the Townsend organization legislative bureau will address attendees at Daniels Park pavilion on Monday at 7 30 p m during the current congressional session.
Mr and Mrs Owen Turner and their daughter Miss Lora Turner returned Friday evening from Du Mont where they visited their son in law and daughter Mr and Mrs Lloyd Faber.
William Clark of Central City was charged with operating a car without adequate brakes or headlights. He was fined $5 and costs in a local justice of the peace court.
Mrs. Stuart J. Dolan and her brother in law Bernard Dolan of Artesia Calif arrived Saturday with the body of Stuart J. Dolan who died last Monday in Artesia.
Mr. and Mrs. D. C. Russell, who had been guests of their niece, Mrs. C. J. Newlin, for several days, returned to their home in Washington Saturday.
Mr and Mrs G A Hutchison are due back today after a two week fishing vacation in Minnesota.
Mrs L Smith plans to depart at the start of the week for Harlowton Montana to visit her husband Mr Smith who is employed there.
Sister Mary Raymond of the Sacred Heart academy in Cedar Rapids spends the weekend with her father Michael J. Curran and her brother Roy Curran.
Mrs Matt Mullin will be brought to her home at 1194 Thirteenth Street today from a Cedar Rapids hospital for recovery and rest.
A. G. Vaughn travels to Tucson Arizona to visit Mrs Vaughn. Miss Virginia Vaughn, recently in Merion with her sister Mrs Ray McCalley, will depart next week for Tucson.

Mr and Mrs Edward Manson and their son Wayne will depart Monday for a ten day vacation in northern Michigan.

The Iowa tax commission appeals to the state supreme court for power to compel out of state mail order houses to collect Iowa use tax on goods ordered by Iowans and shipped from outside. The Polk county district court blocked Sears Roebuck from operating without collecting the tax. The 1937 act aimed to curb border merchants losing trade to states with no or lower sales tax.
