Gregory Petoskey of Moline Illinois had faced first degree burglary going armed with intent and kidnapping for a July 5 1978 incident at a northeast Cedar Rapids residence. The Linn County order dismissed the charges due to destroyed evidence and insufficient proof beyond a reasonable doubt. Similar charges from an October 24 1978 burglary were dismissed earlier. Petoskey had been cleared in crimes tied to a circuit rapist but in January received a five year suspended sentence and three years probation after pleading guilty to taking 900 by deception from the Bottom Half Store in Cedar Rapids while in management with the store operator.
Firefighters in Strawberry Point contained a propane gas spill from a Great Plains Gas tank located one mile south of the city on Highway 3. Officials said the valve had been opened intentionally and the area was fogged after a valve shutoff, with investigation continuing.
In Cedar Rapids a 3 year old, James Marx, was struck by a van while crossing Seventh Avenue SW and admitted with a broken collarbone and head injuries. He is in good condition at Mercy Hospital pediatric unit. The driver Julian J. Perez was not charged. A second 3 year old, Vincent Wheeler, remains in fair to possibly injured condition after a separate A Avenue crash with no formal police report yet filed.

Cedar Rapids Police Youth Bureau says a 17-year-old girl is charged with second degree theft after using her mother's electronic banking card to withdraw 1500 dollars between July 13 and July 20 in 2000s era. The girl faced additional charge of possession of a controlled substance and was released to her parents.
