Washington Republicans predicted final congressional action soon on a sweeping tax overhaul. The compromise bill trims taxes for individuals and many businesses by about 1.363 billion dollars, with dividend tax changes delaying until after July 31 1954 and an array of deductions and filing date shifts included.
Miss South Carolina Miriam Stevenson, 21, from Winnsboro, wins Miss U S A over 46 contestants to face Miss Universe contenders. The Lander College senior, 36-24-36 measurements, 5-foot-6 and 120 pounds, arrives with lost luggage and designs her own gown and swimsuit. Runners up include Miss Virginia Ellen Whitehead and Miss New York State Karin Huitman. Maryland contestant disqualified for being 16, age rules cited.
Special to The Gazette Sally Ann Reete, five, was fatally injured when run over by a wagon on a Spillville area farm two miles west of Spillville. She died at Decorah hospital an hour later. Survived by her parents and two sisters. Services set for Saturday at 9 a.m. in St Wenceslaus church Spillville. Body at Balik funeral home Spillville.
Federal grand jury charged Henry W. Grunewald known as The Dutchman with ten counts of lying under oath about tax fixing and contacts with top Internal Revenue officials. Six counts relate to perjury before House investigators in April 1953. others allege perjury before the grand jury. Conviction could bring up to 70 years in prison and $12,000 in fines.
