Salvador Cruz Jr., 19, of Marshalltown, was sentenced to 24 years after pleading guilty to two counts of intimidation with a dangerous weapon and to accessory after the fact in a fatal party shooting in rural Tama County. Prosecutors dropped first degree murder.
Joellen Bednarowicz, 23, of Marion, was injured when her truck drifted onto the shoulder and overcorrected on Highway 27 north of Nashua. The vehicle rolled several times, she was ejected into a culvert, landed in the median, and the truck and a attached farm trailer caught fire before she was airlifted to Mercy Hospital in Mason City.

The Mark of the Quad-Cities will be renamed the I Wireless Center in Moline Illinois after i wireless obtained naming rights. Urbandale based carrier will pay 4.25 million over ten years and the transition will run through 2017 with upgrades funded, including a new display board.
In the Davenport diocese Chapter 11, the creditors committee objects to hiring McGladrey & Pullen beyond auditing. The committee wants cost and scope limited to financial statement audits, arguing existing financial advisers can handle tax and accounting work. They propose a 23000 cap paid from restricted funds, and note the diocese plans asset liquidation to satisfy creditors amid clergy abuse claims.
A vacant ranch style house at 603 42nd Ave in Amana was engulfed in flames early Friday. Fire crews from Amana with help from Norway and Marengo fought the fire for about an hour. No injuries reported. The unoccupied home was south of Handimart after the owner moved away.
JOETOWN Two people were injured when a car driven by 18 year old Kara Lengeman of Kalona veered on loose gravel on Eagle Avenue near County Road F67 in southwestern Johnson County. The vehicle left the road, rolled in a west ditch, and Andrea Lengeman was ejected. Both were treated at University Hospitals and released.
OLIN Jones County Sheriff's deputies and Anamosa police searched the home of Michael Levsen in Olin and arrested him on drug charges. Officers conducted a 7:30 a.m. search for drugs and materials and returned at 12:30 p.m. for a second sweep, seizing items whose details were not released. Levsen was taken into custody, though age and jail listing were not disclosed.
Police said a brawl at a Quad City Sports Center teen party injured a girl who was cut across the face with a belt buckle and led to five other youths being taken into custody. About 500 teens attended the Thursday event, according to Jeff Bladel.
