Ely Family Courtship Recalled and a Winter Proposal
John Ely recalls meeting Laurel Sullivan in Cedar Rapids during a harsh winter of 1912. The couple wed after a cautious courtship and a family led proposal, marrying for 47 years. The tale centers on a sister’s invitation, a late train, and a modest ring purchase in downtown, with strong local memories of early 20th century romance.

Carmel by the Sea’s village name and quirky ordinances
The Carmel by the Sea village ties its identity to its name with no street addresses, prompting daily mail at the post office. In 1952 a push for street signs faced state threats to withhold gas tax refunds, a standoff that nearly led to secession. The town, famed for trees, once banned sitting on grass and later redefined the act to avoid harming grass or plants.
