Banks of Iowa reported significantly higher earnings in the second quarter of 1989. The improvement reflects stronger loan demand and favorable interest margins across the state's financial institutions.

Sam Mack told a Story County Court he joined Levin White in the March 30 Ames Burger King holdup out of fear for his own safety and for others. Mack described White as having a “weird, crazy” look and threatening to shoot if he did not participate. White, who pled guilty to first degree robbery, contends Mack masterminded the crime.
Ronald L. Kelley, 43, of Cedar Rapids, pleaded guilty to four federal drug charges including conspiracy to distribute cocaine and distributing to those under 21. He faces 1 to 40 years in prison and up to $2 million in fines and must forfeit his 1986 Corvette and home. Sentencing set for Oct. 16.
Voters in Marion Independent and Linn-Mar Community districts decide on a July 1 merger to form the Indian Creek Community School District. About 1,600 students in Marion and 3,000 in Linn-Mar would join a seven member board to govern the new district as turnout is expected to be high and results not yet known tonight.
Cedar Rapids officials advance a plan to drill up to 10 wells in the northwest quadrant and build a new water purification plant to boost supply during droughts. Test drilling has begun across from Seminole Valley Park, with initial output of 20 million gallons daily and potential rise to 100 million gallons. The project spans about three years to complete, with five wells expected by late winter or early spring. Water will flow to the existing plant until the new site is ready and then feed both plants.
Officials report that most water wells in the southern city area have been exhausted leaving the district to rely on remaining supplies and potential contingency measures.
The United States and the Soviet Union have reached agreement on key elements of a chemical weapons ban including destruction timetable and inspection procedures. The draft treaty would prohibit development and stockpiling while allowing limited retention to end of a 10 year transition. inspections would be intrusive and potentially raise constitutional questions. The agreement will be submitted to the Conference on Disarmament in Geneva for consideration.
