Night Blackout At Sardi's In New York City

Don Lamb and wife Sue along with friends endured a citywide blackout while dining at Sardi's on Forty fourth Street. Vincent Sardi eased guests by sharing stories as staff coordinated rides home and cabbies helped shuttle workers and customers to safety.

North Korea Returns Shaken GI and 3 Bodies

The lone U S helicopter survivor, Chief Warrant Officer Glenn M Schwanke, 28, walked across the DMZ at sunset after North Korea handed over three American bodies in plain coffins. A U N honor guard carried the remains to the UNC border as Carter criticized the reaction to the incident.

Ozone Study Says Aircraft Threat to Ozone Not Imminent

FAA scientist Anthony Broderick reports new lab findings show no current aircraft threat to the ozone layer. Results, if confirmed, also indicate fluorocarbons pose a larger threat than earlier thought, contrasting with prior U.S., British and French studies from 1971 to 1974.

Fairfax Grain Co. Elevator Destroyed in Large Fire

Fire crews from Cedar Rapids Hiawatha Palo Swisher Atkins and Ely battled a major blaze that heavily damaged the Fairfax Grain Co elevator and contents. Fairfax Fire Chief Charles Janecek cited water pressure issues from a nearby quarry. Firefighter Gary Stockton aided by Palo’s Red Hanover and Don Sirowy were pictured battling the flames. No cause or damage estimate was released.

Wheat Surplus Prompts Looming U.S. Harvest Curbs

Washington reports the United States faces a record wheat stockpile prompting imminent federal curbs on next year's harvest. Despite bread prices rising little from three years ago, midstream costs keep consumer loaf prices high while a vast wheat surplus cools other grain prices.
