Plow in Drainage Tubing Demonstrated on Iowa Farm

A laser guided plow method for installing corrugated plastic drainage tubing was shown at the Bill Barsa farm near Swisher. The system uses cablelaying gear adapted for tubing, operated by Dick Terrell and Lyle Zimmerman, with two Cat tractors and a Las Er- Plane command post guiding depth and grade. About 10,000 feet of four to six inch tubing are being laid on the 160 acre farm, potentially widening tillable land by five to ten acres in wet years. The method, used in Canada for years, reduces disturbance compared to trenching and was demonstrated at a field day four miles west of here. The tubing runs four to five feet deep and the project feeds runoff to a neighbor Don Sirowy’s tile system.

Ag Secretaries Back Lounsberry Plan for Grain Inspection Reform

Iowa Secretary Robert Lounsberry pushes a reform package approved by 12 Midwest agriculture secretaries. The plan would boost federal grain inspectors at export ports, add producer reps on USDA committees, require federal inquiry into foreign buyers complaints, make grain standard violations felonies, and tighten oversight of testing stations to curb conflicts of interest. It notes inspectors in Des Moines and Cedar Rapids may face conflicts due to employer ties. An economist at the University of Nebraska, James Kendrick, also proposes an independent agency modeled on the Federal Reserve to coordinate long term agricultural programs.
