Donald L. Strait, 32, sat behind a squad car and blocked a tow truck at his 3201 J Street SW home after police advised settlement of a $15 tow bill. His wife paid the bill, Strait resisted leaving, then jumped and struck the truck. He was arrested on a charge of resisting an officer after alcohol reportedly influenced the conduct and he posted a $125 bond.
Edward Heiderscheid, 19, Center Point, pled guilty in Linn district court to robbery for a February 13 theft at Log Cabin tavern 801 Avenue NW. Co-defendants Rodney Overbey and Steve Linsey also pled guilty to robbery. Overbey receives up to 10 years, Linsey to be sentenced July 24, Heiderscheid seeks deferred sentencing with a recommended 10 year term. sentencing set for Sept. 5.
In Manchester court, three boat operators faced fines for negligent operation after fatal and injury crashes at Lake Delhi on June 29 and 30. Dan Rieger, 16, Manchester, and Julia Rathje, 13, Marion, were fined 25 dollars each for the fatal crash that killed Julie Zehr, 15, Manchester. Bill Murray, 52, Hopkinton, also fined 25 dollars for injuries in the June 30 crash.
Washington reports a 5.2 percent drop in new housing starts for June, the lowest annualized rate since 1964. Analysts warn the setback undercuts an improving overall economy despite other indicators signaling recovery.

Raymond Albert Weinhower, 54, of 506 North Center Point Road, Hiawatha, received a one year suspended sentence in Linn district court on a February 7 drunken driving charge. He was fined 500 dollars and had his license revoked. he pled guilty June 11 and had prior drunk driving conviction on February 3, 1972. The judge also required enrollment in a Kirkwood Community College drunk driving course.
Belfast based IRA spokesmen maintain a five month old cease fire remains in effect after a Thursday bombing that killed four British soldiers near Forkhill. Provisional IRA claims responsibility as six soldiers killed in Northern Ireland this year.
