Des Moines AP reports Iowa farmers marketed 17 percent more of their products January through May this year, totaling 1 060 942 000 dollars. Livestock sales drove gains, reaching 80 percent of the dollar total, with cattle and hog prices lifting state income during the slump.
The U S Department of Agriculture reports wheat futures trading rose for the third year and cotton futures increased after a long decline in the year ended June 30 1958. Wheat futures across major exchanges totaled 5 2 billion bushels, up 6 5 percent from 1956 57 the largest since 1947 48.
The 160 acre Lumir Dostat farm 12 miles northeast of Cedar Rapids prepares for state and national corn picking contests on Oct 16 and 17. Contestants from several states are expected in one and two row divisions. About 40 acres host educational and commercial exhibits, 40 acres for corn picking and 120 acres for parking on Dastal and nearby farms. The Cedar Rapids Chamber of Commerce and the WMT stations sponsor, with Iowa State College cooperation.

Ames farmers may file for federal gasoline tax refunds covering July 1 1957 through June 30 1958. The application period runs July 1 to September 30. Farm economist H B Howell urged operators and noted prior claimants have received forms by mail. others may request from the Internal Revenue Service in Des Moines.

The U S department of agriculture announces apportionment of 93.6 million dollars for the 1958 59 school year to operate the national school lunch program an increase of 10 million over last year. Schools will receive foods purchased and distributed for their use with 14 650 000 allocated for food purchases and distribution to meet nutritional needs. The remainder 1 750 000 of the 110 million total appropriated funds will support program administration.
