Construction work underway on the May Drug store front featuring red porcelain enamel with white setters. A larger center display window will replace the current second floor pier and wall, with new ceramic tile vestibules wide doors and alumilite white finish sills and corner bars.
The F. W. Woolworth and company store on Second avenue and Second street SE will celebrate its opening July 20 21 and 22 after a major enlargement and remodel. Highlights include a wider Second avenue entrance, a two story rear addition with kitchen and staff lounge, air conditioning throughout except the kitchen, new lighting with 78 lamps, a 86 foot luncheonette counter with stainless equipment, updated candy counter, tiled kitchen with ovens for 50 pies, a freight elevator, and a brick facade matching the Dows building.

Arthur J. Westenborg manager of the Hollywood Shoe shop at Killian's buys a lot in Clarendon Hills northwest of Franklin school on Longwood drive NE to build a home for himself and his parents. Sale made by Higley Land company through Hedges company. Other Hedges transactions include several house and lot sales and an acreage tract in Westland acres near Vinton road.
Air-conditioning units recently installed by Hall Manufacturing in three locations include the Techel Bottling Company offices at 400 Sixth Avenue SE, Dr. L. A. Kessler’s office in the Paramount Building at 418, and Dr. F. W. Mulsow’s bedroom at 359 Garden Drive SE.
A bonze insect screen cloth with 256 meshes per square inch yields over 663000 openings in a window three feet by six feet when fully screened.
Cedar Rapids home at 1957 Washington Avenue SE substitutes a utility room for a basement due to rock beneath two feet. The Meeks built on rock level with an oil furnace and laundry in a rear addition. The house features blue and white kitchen accents, a baby grand piano, mahogany furnishings, four bedrooms in two floors, and a garage attic. Don Barry designed and Bever and built the house.
Edwin H. Owen manager of Standard Tire company at 96 First Avenue East reports air-conditioning of the main offices with Kelvinator room coolers. Accounting rooms are cooled and plans call for air-conditioning the sales room soon.
H E Johnson and family from Washington Iowa rent Emma Achter residence at 351 Nineteenth St SE through Fred E Collard and Co and will take possession in late July. Johnson is a construction engineer with the Rock Island railroad. Through Collards also the furnished apartment of Mrs Leonard Martin at 1059 Seventeenth St NE is rented to the W F Stevens family from Cleveland Ohio.
Stevens, a traveling representative for the Ayr-Mor laundry machinery company of Chicago, notes flowers that stay open only at night come in yellow or white colors.
Remodeling at the Woman's Club on 1110 Second Avenue SE begins with tearing out first floor partitions to form a single large room intended as an auditorium for about 200 seats. A front rounding platform will be added, and the second floor stairway rebuilt. Mrs. Aulden Griffin, club president, notes further redecorating and electrical work after remodeling. The contract is held by Morehead Frederikson Company.
Craemer's department store on First avenue is now fully air conditioned with two 15 H. P. compressors in series using well water for cooling. Morehead-Frederikson company completed the work. The second floor remodeling added new fixtures and larger departments while fitting rooms and the sportswear area were updated.
The former residence of Robert J. Miller secretary of Martin Dry Goods at 1860 B avenue NE will be remodeled into four apartments. Remodeling will start soon. Miller is building a new home at 1850 B avenue NE.
