Edward J. Merchant of Vinton pleaded guilty to two conspiracy charges linked to a plan to lease a high performance jet for drug smuggling. Prosecutors and witnesses testified of intercepted conversations with Merchant and three other defendants, including Victor Bonilla, Benny Darby, and Robert Krevsky. Sentencing is set for August 11 with a potential 30 year term and $50,000 fine.
Two Canadian officials of the International Control Commission in Vietnam were released after 17 days in Communist custody. The men were held during the Hanoi area incident and are returning to their duties with ICC observers.
