Attempt To End EEA Funding at Kirkwood Fails

An effort to terminate Kirkwood Community College’s Emergency Employment Act funds for a second year failed for lack of a formal motion at a Thursday MAPC meeting. EEA job developer Mike Ster proposed not renewing two positions when funding ends in August, noting educational grants could cover the cost. Kirkwood’s inclusion on a funding list was noted, while city EEA director Ron Kuhlman said no funds would be withdrawn. The council intends to prepare for possible second-year grants, with a maximum of 12 000 per employed person including benefits.

Entrails Cleared After Roadway Rendering Spill

Firemen, Buchanan county workers, and a Darling Rendering Co employee labored until 3 a.m. cleaning 1.3 miles of county highway two miles north of Winthrop after a rendering truck driven by Roger Johnson of Alpha spilled about 8 000 pounds of ground up animal entrails. Johnson notified his boss who dispatched two trucks to shovel the mess, authorities blocked and detoured traffic, and crews spread sand to absorb remaining material.

Coe College Receives NSF Grant for Spectrophotometer

Coe College and five other Iowa colleges receive National Science Foundation grants to buy scientific equipment for undergraduate programs. Coe's chemistry department gets 2300 dollars to purchase an atomic absorption spectrophotometer and accessories, to be matched by college funds. Other recipients include Cornell Grinnell Luther Drake and Iowa State universities with similar grants in chemistry biology psychology and related fields.

Nursing education funds awarded to Iowa schools

The Department of Health, Education, and Welfare awarded loans and scholarships for nursing studies to Kirkwood Community College in Cedar Rapids for 8182 dollars, Clinton Community College for 4705 dollars, N. E. Area One Voc-Tech School for 4091 dollars, Mt. Mercy College for 20675 dollars in loans and 24544 in scholarships, Mercy Medical Center in Dubuque for 8320 dollars and 10022 in scholarships, and St. Luke's Hospital in Cedar Rapids for 19942 dollars. All funds support nursing education, per Congressman John C. Culver.

Elkader Girl Hurt In Auto Accident

Thora Fiske, 14, of Elkader was in good condition at a Manchester hospital after a two car crash on Main Street at 4 58 p m Friday. Police say Diane McFeeters, 19, and Barbara Fisko, 46, collided. Thora was a passenger in her mother’s car. McFeeters charged with failure to yield right of way.

Crystal Lake Man Dies in Accident Near Belmond

A 78 year old Crystal Lake man Lawrence Nielsen died in a collision on highway 69 south of Belmond. His wife Elsie Nielsen 67 was in satisfactory condition at a Belmond hospital. The crash involved a pickup driven by Howard Smith Jewell and a third vehicle with no injuries.

Sioux Mother to Fight Pentagon Over Son

Maria Thompson Pierson, a full-blood Sioux from Maine, declares war on the Pentagon over her son Robert, 23, a clerk-typist at Ft. Bragg, who she says was denied a Green Berets slot and promises for a military post. She plans to take the case to court, arguing treaty and rights violations as her son returns on weekend leave.

Pays Taxes with Ton of Pennies

Larry Hermone of San Jose paid off 250000 pennies totaling 2500 dollars after months of tax wrangling. He delivered the coin payload to an IRS office in an armored truck, ending a dispute over back taxes once owed at four thousand dollars. He had offered installments, which the IRS refused. The pennies came from his bank via the Federal Reserve in San Francisco.

Monona Man, 20, Is Killed in Crash

A 20 year old Monona man, Michael Burkhart, died Friday night when his car collided with a Sioux City family’s camper on highway 18 three miles east of Monona during a driving rain storm. The six Sioux City residents, including four daughters, were hospitalized at Postville. Burkhart’s wife and his parents survive. Schultz funeral home arranging services.

Iowa insurer ordered to rehire woman in rights case

The Iowa Civil Rights commission ordered HomeSteaders Life Insurance Co. to reinstate Diane Kepner a 27 year old Des Moines secretary and to pay back salary for 17 months after she was fired for seeking maternity benefits equalization. The 16 page decision found the dismissal violated civil rights law and cited her efforts to obtain parity in the company program.
